Roger Rabbit also had a scene early in the movie where Baby Herman walks between a woman's legs, reaches up and gooses her with his finger. Disney digitally erased his entire arm in that scene for the more recent versions.
When Dirty Dancing came out there were girls from my high school seen crying as they left the theatre. I knew then I never wanted to see it and still haven't .
I always thought that the Ben Affleck storyline in Mallrats was a play on Dirty Dancing but it might have just been the cinematography, certainly doing something somewhere uncomfortable like the back of a Volkswagen isn't quite the same as putting baby in the corner but Affleck gets his comeuppance for being an absolute creep.
How about analysing the lyrics of many mainstream pop songs of the 1960s to mid 1980s but I think late 60s to mid 70s was the worst. I KNOW loads of people NEVER took any notice of the words at all,it was the overall sound, and being heard as dance music in a disco with alcohol involved,a lot of people lately when told this or that song says this or that will say,"really I never knew that,oh well it was different back then". I love all the golden oldies even the (imo) dodgy ones but I reckon you could have some fun analyzing some of them. You could start with The Beach Boys, "wouldn't it be nice if we were older..."..
I was 16 when I saw Animal House and to this day it’s a guilty pleasure movie. Yes it’s horrible in a lot of ways but let’s just say it prepared me for college. As for Big, I loved that movie too. But the Josh-Susan dynamic was weird even then.
I wonder how many kids besides me rented something by Lucio Fulci and was traumatized by it. I still have nightmares about The Gates of Hell, and I’ve seen it a million times.
They kind of got the marketing wrong for Roger Rabbit. It really was a film for adults. It was smart and funny and the references were aimed squarely at grown adults who had seen Disney and Warner brothers cartoons at the cinema and knew about noir movies and dime store books. But you know Hollywood : the budget was about half of it is to make the movie, 20% straight to the producers and the rest is marketing. So the morons licenced toys to be another Star Wars and they didn't sell, because it wasn't a kids movie. They probably buried all the Roger Rabbit plush toys with the cartridges of the Atari ET game.
Yeah, I rewatched Animal House recently and it did not age well. Fun fact: the actor who played Neidermeyer went on to play The Master in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The Cannonball Run was great. All of those actors, Martin and Davis Jr. especially, helped us appreciate the classic or old era of filmmaking. Along with Its A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World which I don’t think you have mentioned yet (I strongly recommend it). Some of the others, yeah they are problematic. But none of us took The Bad News Bears too seriously (assuming you were raised to respect others).
Looking back and realizing how many of these ended up being turned into TV series is truly eye-opening: Animal House was turned into Delta House for a mid-season replacement, an Bad News Bears got a one season run with Jack Warden slipping into Walter Matthau’s role. Sanitized of course, but the mind reels.
"Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life son" 😂😂
“I’m a zit!”
Made for a great meme, before anyone started memeing.
Sooo much meme fodder in Animal House

“Get out of the way, fuzzy lines, I’m looking up this cartoon’s dress!”
This might be the best sentence I’ve ever read on Substack.
🙄🙄🙄
Very fine essay. Here is my take on Dirty Dancing.

100% on Big. I liked it as a kid but as an adult, it creeps me out.

We were “lucky” enough to see Soul Man in a theater; wow!🤣

And The Maestro in Seinfeld.
